Unraveling the Depths of Emotional Addiction Through ZØ Marie's “Growing Up”

ZØ Marie reminisces on her first memories of music. “My mother played classical music at bedtime to lull me to sleep. My father would hold me in his arms each morning, serenading me with the Temptations.” Those early memories and the realization that she loved singing and performing led ZØ Marie on her journey to record SOULMATE, her (2022) debut album.

The Italian-American artist draws from her early exposure to soulful music to create heartfelt and original sounds that spiritually pay tribute to the timeless allure of soul-infused music she grew up with. Mentored by the legendary R&B/pop singer Jean Carn, she has refined her skills through years of dance and vocal training. With a major in English from Columbia University, she aims to spread love and positivity through her music, aspiring to inspire others to embrace their true selves.

ZØ Marie is kickstarting her 2024 with a bang, a song titled “Addiction” which offers a mystifying and original sound that combines a smooth foundation of her soulful R&B, with some wistful 90s alternative music and an enthralling twist of baroque pop, resulting in a cohesive and compelling musical blend. Her shimmering, ethereal vocals add an extra layer of poignancy to the composition.

“If addiction exists, true love cannot exist. This song takes you on a journey of what it is like to be obsessed with the feeling another person gives you and how that addiction prohibits a person from ever finding love but only living an abnormal, lustful life filled with toxic relationships.” – ZØ Marie

Being addicted to what another person makes you feel involves becoming emotionally reliant on them for validation, happiness, and fulfillment. This often leads to constantly seeking approval and reassurance from the other person, creating an unhealthy and imbalanced relationship dynamic. This form of “love addiction” can also lead to neglecting one's own needs and well-being, as the focus is primarily on the feelings and actions of the other person.

ZØ Marie’s new release is a poignant reminder for us to strive to develop a healthier sense of self-worth and emotional independence, as it might just save our relationships and/or ourselves!
