Swanky Ma: From Young Mommy to all the Mothers
As journalists, sometimes we have to write about topics with which we feel more affinity than with others and that is exactly what happened to me when I received the Young Mommy material, “Swanky Ma”.
There are so many prejudices around motherhood and they go from one extreme to another. Some think it's a romantic and perfect job, while others say it's a chaos of diapers, toys and crying 24/7. The truth is that neither one thing nor the other. Like any job, it has its ups and downs.
But it has become customary to deprive mothers of joy, fun, music and entertainment, among many other things. That's why Young Mommy's “Swanky Ma” is a good way to vindicate someone that everyone in the world has or had and where we all come from: A mother.
Her song is an uplifting anthem for mothers to believe in themselves and talk about exactly what they want and who they want to be. Young Mommy worked with Dallas rapper Midwest Don to craft the perfect lyrics for an edgy ode to moms.
The beat is catchy from the start and grabs you by the ears. The video for the song shows a very well-dressed Young Mommy, with a comfortable outfit, but always highlighting her femininity. All this, while she does the daily activities of motherhood, like getting the kids up in the morning, getting them ready and taking them to school.
To all the moms out there, I know what you're thinking, and of course this isn't what happens every day, but it's a good reminder that motherhood shouldn't be synonymous with carelessness.
Her message is everything: “I want to send a strong message to everyone listening that moms are beautiful and powerful, we just don't always believe it. We need to be elevated in society for all that we do for our families and that’s what I want people to take away. My vision was to create a song dedicated to moms but that anyone could dance to and enjoy. With 'Swanky Ma' I wanted to put moms back on the map in an over-the-top way. To stand out and achieve our goals we have to be bold and walk with swag in our step. I feel so proud to be a mother and deserve the best that life has to offer to run my house, raise loving babies and rock my career."
The song is also a kind of criticism of how little there is in the industry specifically for mothers and a reminder not to lose sight of the fact that being mothers, women have the right and the need to maintain an identity that allows them to continue being attractive and appreciated. Seeing themselves young, cute and empowered while raising the human beings that will populate this world is really sexy.
