Susannah B, a dynamic and seasoned artist whose career has spanned off-Broadway stages, pop, and jazz clubs from Manhattan to Los Angeles, delivers a deeply heartfelt rendition of “It’s Alright to Cry”.

Originally penned by Susannah B’s mother, renowned Broadway composer/lyricist Carol Hall, for the 70s children’s album "Free to Be… You and Me", “It’s Alright to Cry” has been transformed into a soulful, contemporary piece that resonates with both its original innocence and a mature depth. Carol Hall, best known for her work on the iconic musical "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", imbued the song with a timeless message that Susannah B has masterfully preserved and expanded upon.

Susannah B’s rendition of “It’s Alright to Cry” beautifully captures the song’s essence, providing a fresh perspective. The song’s simple yet profound lyrics encourage emotional honesty and acceptance, a message that remains poignant across generations. Susannah B’s voice, rich with emotion and experience, adds layers of meaning to lines like “It’s alright to cry, crying gets the sad out of you” and “Feelings are such real things, but they change and change and change.”

The production, led by Susannah B and keyboardist Michael Farrell, known for his work with Alanis Morissette and Macy Gray, is both elegant and restrained, allowing Susannah B’s vocals to shine. The band, comprised of veteran touring musicians including drummer Victor Indrizzo, bassist Sean Hurley, guitarist David Levita, and saxophonist Sal Lozano, provides a lush, supportive backdrop that enhances the song’s emotional impact without overshadowing it.

Susannah B’s interpretation of “It’s Alright to Cry” serves as a bridge between her mother’s legacy and her own artistic evolution. By reimagining this classic, she not only honors her mother’s work but also brings a renewed relevance to its message.

In “It’s Alright to Cry,” Susannah B has crafted a track that is both a comforting balm and a gentle reminder of the importance of embracing our emotions.
