'Side Effects' from Yarim Glam: On the Fight for Mental health

'Side Effects', by singer and performer Yarim Glam, is a song that feels very intimate and close, like a kind of personal reflection of the very soul of the Israeli-born performer.

The single shines a spotlight on the fight against mental health issues and their devastating effects, especially anxiety, which she went through herself and about which she is very honest when speaking.

“I've shared my journey of self-acceptance. I opened up about my struggles with mental health issues and an eating disorder. I've been so real and honest with my lyrics hoping that they'll help anyone out there who's been going through what I have, or something similar”, she said.

Subdued rhythms and warm textured vocals define the song in stylistic terms, which feels like sinking deep into a thick ethereal atmosphere of thoughts. Yarim strives to not only make music capable of exposing the effects of mental health but also the empowerment and self-acceptance of them, as a first step towards healing. The comfort with which she manages her sound is authentic and no one would think that her relationship with American music began through her siblings.

“My sister listened to a lot of––I think her favorite was Britney Spears actually. But she would [also] listen to a lot of Beyoncé, and even Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna. And I would always be interested in the stuff she would listen to,” she adds. “It sounded so big in a sense. [T]he production, and the music videos, everything was so well put together and I was very intrigued by it.”

She started making music at the age of 17 and so far, she has collected more than 160,000 streams just on Spotify. In 2020, Yarin released "Free", which -again- celebrates diversity and Yarin's journey toward self-acceptance, healing and love.

Yarin dropped "Free" which celebrates diversity and Yarin's personal journey toward self-acceptance. In early 2021, Yarin's electric EP Realness was released, followed by an acoustic version of the EP later that summer. Upbeat and dreamy with notes of Middle-Eastern pop, her debut EP drew in a captivated audience. With more than 88K followers on instagram, fans are patiently waiting for her next release.
