You better listen to 'Unfortunate men' by Brenda Carsey so you know what we are talking about.

What does it mean, and how does it feel to be a woman in this world? The answer may be both beautiful and painful, but definitely, genuine, and this is exactly the subject behind the new release from Brenda Carsey, ‘Unfortunate Men’.

The song talks about all the things women have to deal with in society and the fact that men don’t ever experience those things, not just as a disclaimer or a futile statement, but as a call to action that is done through the dramatic telling of a myriad of stories and perspectives about being women. This is part of her full-length studio album named ‘Cognizance’ and it was produced, composed, and co-mixed by Carsey in collaboration with the Grammy Award-winning engineer and mixer Mark Rains of Station House Studio in LA.

The song is a pop anthem accompanied by an emotive piano, haunting echoes, deep drums and bass, an explosion of glam rock guitar, and a full choir of women singing about how challenging it is to be born under the mark of Venus. Brenda’s voice stands out and serves as a guide that sets the tone and cadence of the entire melody.

The video is just exquisite. A mixture of nostalgia, art, simplicity, introspection, and movement that goes hand in hand with the captivating sounds. An explosion of lines, colors, forms, and fractals that serve to merge your consciousness with the universe of the music video. Frame by frame, the video was hand drawn by Sharon Like, who managed to capture the complex and profound feeling found at the heart of the lyrics and the dynamics of the instrumentation.

Among Brenda Carsey’s notes and tones, we can easily find references to artists who have been an influence on her, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Freddie Mercury, Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Barbra Streisand or Jim Morrison.

Preceded by ‘Solitary Refinement’, ‘Cognizance’ is the second full-length studio album from vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Brenda Carsey. The title is a clear reference to the awareness, experience, and growth it contains.  It also has a wide range of tones, textures, instruments, and genres throughout the 13 songs that cover subjects related to family, love, breakups, public shootings, partying, fear, depression, isolation, and of course, the experience of being a woman in the music industry and in life.

This album is the best quality album I have created to date…I wanted to push myself sonically beyond anything I have ever created and reach into the depths of my soul to bring to life art with a message through music that keeps the mind guessing and the heart happy!’ Carsey said.

With each new step, Brenda's shown that she is not a newcomer. Her music has been described as brilliant, timeless and playful, able to offer tracks with poetic lyrics, fluid melodies, engaging chord progressions, funky rhythms, and a voice filled with passion and soul. So far, it looks like she has done a lot. She has been studying music and performing since the age of five in choirs, orchestras, marching bands, soul, jazz, rock, pop, folk, hip-hop, electronic groups, cabaret stage shows, and solo projects.

Thanks to the fact that she also produces electronic music, she has managed to appear as an instrumentalist and vocalist on many projects in partnership with Netflix such as Easy-Bake Battle, The Baby-Sitters Club, Better Call Saul, Tiger King The Musical, The Voice, Joy Ride, Rapture, as well as on albums by Whitney Tai, Cesar Saez, Phoebe Silva, Kid Lightning, Clark Chimp, and Feral Kizzy.
