Within moments of tuning into Ava Jules’ YouTube channel, anyone’s day will be instantly brightened. Positivity permeates the page full of island adventures, advice, self-care tips, and more. She is sunshine personified, bringing good vibes and uplifting content to her 1.3 million-plus subscribers. Ava Jules’ phenomenal perspective on life — coupled with her ever-growing digital empire, Hawaii-inspired jewelry collection, and upcoming sustainably-designed merch line —  prove that she is truly making the world a better place, one YouTube video at a time.

Many of Ava Jules’ videos take viewers on trips around O’ahu, the beautiful island she grew up on. “Growing up here is an experience unlike anything else and I’m really lucky to have been raised in a place where you’re taught to love the land and show others aloha,” Jules says. “Our family spent a lot of time outdoors, enjoying the beach and going on gorgeous hikes.”

In addition to adventuring on O’ahu, Jules and her older sister also “did a lot of activities together like dancing hula, gymnastics, and other sports,” she recalls. Moreover, it was only a matter of time before Ava Jules found her way to a camera. “On our family trips, my sister and I used to make comedy skits on an old camera my parents had,” Jules says. It would seem that videography was in her very nature. “My mom was actually quite the vlogger herself, making tons of home videos of my sister and me,” Jules continues. “There’s even a few clips of me at 3 trying to grab the camera from her and film myself.”

From there, it was not long before Jules made her way to YouTube, by way of none other than Justin Bieber. “Prior to starting my channel in 2013, I would always watch other Bieber fans make videos about their posters and do merch hauls,” Jules says. “So I thought.. hey, I can do that!” Of course, Jules’ presence on YouTube would go on to be her career, although that was far from her goal at the start. “The early days on YouTube for me was purely for my own enjoyment,” Jules notes. “I would barely hit 10 views, but it didn’t matter because I was having the best time making silly videos about my Bieber obsession.”

It was not until 2017 that the prospect of YouTube being more than just a hobby even registered with Jules. “I got an email from Garage Clothing saying that they would fly me out to Canada to participate in a girls empowerment campaign,” she recalls. “That alone was so shocking to me, I thought there was no way this opportunity could be real. After all, I had around 50k subscribers and they were such a well-known company.” The surprise continued, as 16-year-old Jules learned that the Garage trip was a paid opportunity. “I immediately ran to my parents, who said, ‘This is definitely a scam,’” Jules explains. Ultimately the event was far from a scam, but rather the start of a newfound career for Ava Jules. “The experience ended up being my first brand trip, and my first time getting paid for doing what I do,” Jules says. “Never would I have thought that I’d end up where I am today. Every day I get to do this dream job, it still doesn’t feel real.”

Now, as an absolute force in the world of YouTube and content creation, Jules’ days are spent pursuing this passion of hers as a full-time career. However, each day brings something different. “My day-to-day changes on what I have to do,” Jules explains. “Some days I might need to drive around the island getting Instagram content – and other days I’m sitting in my room, filming and editing for hours.” While many days are dissimilar in what Jules needs to accomplish, there is one thing that remains consistent: her morning routine. “My mornings start off relatively early at around 7AM,” Jules shares. “First, I get some movement in, whether that’s taking my dog for a long walk or doing a strength workout. Then I’ll make myself a smoothie for breakfast, shower, and get ready for the day. One thing that has made my mornings significantly better is waiting to go on my phone and social media until after I’m done with my routine.”

With over 1.3 million subscribers and 100 million views on her main YouTube channel, Jules’ content is clearly adored by many. With a self-described “relaxed and real” style to her videos, Ava Jules’ authenticity and kindness makes her simultaneously relatable and a role model to millions. “Viewers tell me my videos have a very ‘FaceTime’ feel to them, which I think is the best compliment I could ever get,” Jules says. “I didn’t really realize I was creating videos with a genuine feel until people told me I was. The way I film my videos is the way I see it in real life. I don’t try to do anything too crazy with the editing, but still make it aesthetically pleasing.”

In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, Jules’ editing style is also distinctly creative, an ability of hers that she was not aware of until she started filming YouTube videos. “I’ve learned that I’m a very creative person, just not in the usual way,” she explains. “I used to always wish I was talented at drawing or painting, but I could never create what I had thought up in my head. With YouTube, I can get super creative with my filming and editing style and it’s something I’m really good at.”

Through YouTube, Jules has been able to explore this creative side of hers even further, including endeavors such as acting, photography, and fashion design. “Acting on a web series was unlike anything I’ve done before,” Jules says of portraying Adrienne in On The Ropes.  “Getting to become a different person and seeing the behind the scenes of how a real show is put together was a super cool experience. Acting is one of the most fun things I’ve ever done, but also pretty difficult. I give so much credit to all of the actors and actresses out there for portraying their characters so naturally. I hope to do more acting in the future, but I definitely want to take some classes to learn more about the art.”

In other creative pursuits, Jules has recently found herself drawn to fashion design, particularly in creating her own sustainably-designed merch line. “Fashion has become a part of my life now more than ever,” she explains. “While I did have some iconic fashion moments when I was young — imagine a denim on denim look with a pink boa — I only recently realized that it’s so much fun to put on outfits and try different looks.” Likewise, Jules has since been able to explore this new passion of hers by creating her own merchandise. “Designing my own line was a dream when I was little that I now get to live out with my sustainably-designed merch,” she says. “There’s something for everyone with the ‘Aloha’ line and the ‘Inspire’ line, and I can’t wait to share it with others.”

During quarantine, Ava was able to pursue another creative endeavor in the form of film photography, a hobby she very much enjoys for the new way it makes the photographer look at the image. “Something about not being able to analyze a photo after you’ve taken it is really relieving, and lets you live in the moment more,” she says. The pandemic and subsequent lockdown also brought Jules a new way to look at the world. “The pandemic showed me that I don’t have to do crazy extravagant things like traveling the world and doing crazy collabs,” she explains. “While I look forward to travel vlogging again, people truly loved and responded so well to the relatable ‘at-home’ content. It really showed me that people like the chill vlogs and want to see the real stuff, not always just the glamour of the influencer world.”

Indeed, the influencer world does come across as alluring, however, Jules explains that the industry can be misunderstood. “There’s so much work that goes into creating content that people don’t see,” she says. “At times, I’ve spent over 20-hours on a single YouTube video. Viewers only see the final product, not the hours spent planning, shooting, and editing the content.” All this work can also seem thankless at times, especially when content creators are just starting out their channels. Jules understands these difficulties and has helpful tips to share. “Numbers are just numbers,” she notes. “I used to focus so much on them and it would really take away from my creativity and flow. Stay dedicated and create passionately. It’s very easy to get frustrated when you start out because not many people may be seeing your content, but you have to stay persistent. Building an audience isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. Create what feels true to you and what makes you excited!”

As far as what excites Ava Jules in her content creation, collaborations with her friend and fellow YouTuber Hannah Meloche rank high on that list. “Hannah and I became friends because she slid in my Twitter DMs,” Jules recalls. “A few FaceTime calls later, she came to visit me on O’ahu, which felt so insane to meet someone I’ve only seen online.” Since then, the duo’s online friendship content has been a constant beacon of light on YouTube. And while they have done countless video collaborations together — Jules’ favorite being when they tried different recipes from the internet — they have also collaborated on other things, such as jewelry collections.

Jules’ Hawaii-inspired jewelry collection is in collaboration with Meloche’s “Starlite Village.” The collection was an instant hit, debuting to over 4,000 people waiting on the site for the launch and completely selling out in only 25 hours. “The most important part of this collection was making something that was meaningful to me and represented a piece of our friendship,” Jules says. The collaboration began in February of 2020, Jules recalls. “Right before Covid hit, Hannah and I were in LA together,” Jules says. “She asked me, ‘Hey what do you think about doing a jewelry collection together?’ Of course, I was all for that idea. So we went to the headquarters of where the jewelry is made and they told me all of the possibilities for jewelry I could make. From there, I created a huge Pinterest board of inspiration and then went to sketch my own drawings on my iPad. It was crazy to me how they were able to see my vision, take my drawing, and turn it into a mock-up of the first sample. There was a ton of back and forth, but months later everything finally came together.”

In addition to collaborating with Hannah, Ava has also partnered with companies that align with her passion for environmental conservation, such as 4Ocean. “4Ocean is a company whose mission is to clean out plastic pollution and create a better environment for the ocean,” Jules explains. “They sell bracelets that in exchange for a purchase, clean one pound of trash out of the ocean. I love working with them and helping to spread their mission because if more of us can come together, we can make a world of a difference.” Jules says her love for the ocean began when she was a toddler. “I spent so much time in the ocean, appreciating its beauty and creatures, that I feel I have a kuleana (responsibility) to do my part to take care of it,” she explains.

Similarly, Jules has plenty of helpful advice on how people can be kinder to the environment, save the oceans, and live a more sustainable life. “It’s a lot easier than we think,” she shares. “Bring a water bottle with you everywhere so that you don’t have to buy a plastic one, carry your own reusable bags to grocery stores and when you go shopping, use SPF that is reef safe and avoid ingredients like: octinoxate, oxybenzone, homosalate, and octocrylene,  switch from plastic zip bags to reusable containers, get a bamboo toothbrush, drink milk alternatives, sell your old clothes or donate them instead of throwing them away, and give things a new life by upcycling them or passing the item on to someone who needs it.”

Other topics that Ava Jules raises an awareness of on her platforms include body positivity and self-confidence. “These topics each have relevance to my life and are things I genuinely care about,” she says. “The topic surrounding self-love and confidence is something I’ve struggled with before and have felt really alone through. It’s really important to me to create a safe and loving space on my social platforms, so that people don’t feel alone through their struggles and know they have someone on their side.”

When discussing body positivity, Jules explains that it “means not only being kind to your own body, but kind to others.” Furthermore, she continues to discuss the importance of using new terms, such as body neutrality, as “body positivity isn’t the end all be all.” Indeed, the mindset of body neutrality seems to be the future. “It means to accept your body as is, and promotes the idea that you can exist without thinking about your body one way or another, positive or negative,” Jules says. “I love the idea of body neutrality because it’s not always about chasing your ideal body so you can finally be body positive. If that’s the case we’d always be chasing, because humans seem to just naturally never be satisfied with how we look. Instead, we can be neutral about it.” Ava emphasizes the importance that kindness plays in all of this. “We live in a world where it’s very easy to be judgmental, but if we can accept one another and be kind, the world will become a happier place.”

Ava Jules’ incredible perspectives on these topics are evident in everything that she posts on her platform, which creates an inspiring community for people everywhere to join. Ava is so loved and admired by her millions of viewers, and as she explains, the feeling is mutual. She notes that one of her favorite things about her career has been her relationship with her viewers, or as she thinks of them, her “friends all over the world.” And while there are countless rewarding aspects to her career, Jules notes that she thinks “one of the best is meeting a viewer in real life and having a conversation with them and laughing and crying and hugging.” “We’re so close,” Jules shares. “I feel really connected to them. It’s so fun meeting viewers in real life because it’s like we’re instant besties.”

While Jules herself is an inspiration to millions of people all around the world, she herself is currently inspired by Matilda Djerf. “She’s created a lovely space on social media that’s very positive and free,” Jules says. “She also has a successful brand, Djerf Avenue, which inspires me to build something myself too.” As far as personal inspirations go, Ava cites her sister. In fact, her sister’s return home from New York was the highlight of Jules’ quarantine. “She chose to follow her dreams and went to build a successful career as a performer and trainer in NYC,” Jules explains. “Seeing her work hard toward her goals and achieving them inspires me greatly.”

Looking forward, Jules has wonderful goals. “I hope to build something bigger than myself that reaches people outside of my audience,” she shares. In addition, there are lots of things that fans can keep an eye out for. “I may or may not be creating a line of accessories that are the cutest pieces I think I’ve ever seen,” Jules says. “Stay tuned!”

Ava Jules is a star, both in her YouTube prowess and in the fact that she truly shines. Her energy, light, and positivity illuminates both the internet and the world. Moreover, just like a star, the sky seems to be the limit for what she can and will accomplish next. Indeed, the statement that Ava Jules wishes she could personally tell all of her followers also applies to her: “You are worthy and capable of amazing things.”
