Shaking the Family Tree: Hip-Hop artists 'AK' Expands his Roots and Shares All with Rival
If you like Hip-Hop and R&B music, then you probably have heard of Austin Kassabian or AK which is what he goes by in the music world. From freestyling to “Panda” by Desiigner to releasing his latest song and video “Family Tree”, AK keeps serving up well-rounded, relatable, and unpredictable musical surprises.
New Jersey native AK believes that an artist in today’s world is comprised of someone who is creating and constructing something that brings out people’s emotions. With that mentality, it makes sense that he initially made his own musical debut online, and he believes that technology is offering a new platform for creatives to create and also be heard. “[Now, online] you can showcase your talents, create a brand, and build something special. [And you can do all that] while having people support you while you are doing what you love. It’s honestly a beautiful thing.” Additionally, AK recently used Deepfake technology to morph into musical icons, Drake, Missy Elliot, Snoop Dogg and more in his music video as a tribute to them for paving the way in the genre. And on that note, AK sat down with RIVAL to give all the details on life lately, his new video “Family Tree”, and what is to come.
First of all, how have you been feeling lately?
I’ve been feeling pretty good recently. A lot of things are on the way and I'm excited to reap the benefits of my hard work. The songs are getting better and my production is getting better. I’ve been grinding constantly to show improvement in that aspect of music, which is something I've always wanted to dig deeper into and learn.
With everything going on this year, what gives you inspiration when you are feeling stuck?
I like exercising, going to the beach, going for a walk, driving. Something that keeps me busy and my mind not focused on music as much. I like to escape it, then try tapping back in and seeing where my heads at then.
That sounds like a great method. Speaking of music, have you always known that you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I never knew what direction I was going in until I found music. I was in my Sophomore year of high school after I saw JCole perform at a venue near me. That night changed my entire life.
Let’s talk about “Family Tree.” You have commented that this music video is about paying homage to hip hop legends who have inspired and influenced you. Why do you think this message is especially important in the world we live in today?
It’s important to respect the ones before you because if they didn't exist, do you think you’d be in the position you’re in today? Somebody you're a fan of is a fan of someone else who could have been a major reason why they’re the way they are. They paved the way.
Have you learned anything new from releasing “Family Tree”?
Putting out “Family Tree” made me realize how important it is to take time with what I do. This video and song took about a year of planning and working to get it to where it is. So, if I took away anything from this release, it’s that patience is key.
Give us your favorite lyric from any of your songs.
“Hug the ones you love, express it while you can. Know that no one is above, we all humans at the end”
Understandable why that is your favorite lyric, and we could all do with repeating that this year. Given you paid homage to a few specific hip hop legends in your newest song and video, is there a particular song by any of those artists that you are playing on repeat lately?
To be truthful, lately I’ve been constantly listening to my own stuff since I’ve been either working on a mix, writing something new, or producing. A lot of the music I’ve been listening to more recently has been my own.
Fair enough. Is there someone in the industry that you really want to work with that you have not had the chance to work with yet?
JCole. He’s been such a big influence on me from when he put out “Cole World”.
Do you sometimes think of trying something totally new in terms of music genre/instruments?
This probably a mad weird answer, but I want to learn to play classical piano. I can play keys pretty well; I just really feel like I could excel in that if I really tried at it.
Not weird at all – we will stay tuned! On that note, what are you working on now and what is next?
I've been working constantly on new music and setting up my next releases. Excited for things to clear back up and get on the road again. I can’t wait for tour!
