'The Wrecks' Conclude the 'Better than Ever' Tour at Los Angeles Regent Theater

A few weeks back, I found myself at ‘The Wrecks’ album release party where they performed a handful of acoustic songs off of their sophomore album ‘Sonder’ and I was shook! I admit I was not too familiar with the band prior to this record but after seeing the band live I HAD to catch up on everything ‘The Wrecks’. I immediately downloaded ‘Sonder’ and have been playing it front to back since its release back in June and I kid you not, there is not one skippable track on the record. With songs like, ‘I Love This Part’ and ‘Sonder’ making its rounds on the airwaves and a nearly sold out tour, the Los Angeles based indie rockers secured their spot as one of my favorite bands to reemerge this year.

I had the pleasure of attending the sold out “Better Than Ever Tour” when it concluded its 33rd and final stop here in Los Angeles this past Saturday and to say I had been eagerly anticipating this show is an understatement. First things first, tour merch…being the last show on the run there was slim pickin’s but I secured a bucket hat and tour shirt before heading into the venue to catch “Mothe’ who was taking to the stage as I was arriving. ‘Mothe’ was clearly no stranger to the audience as fans sang and danced along to every word they played. It was a really entertaining set and piqued my interest enough to check out some of their songs a couple days after the show.

‘Girlhouse’ or Lauren Luis is known for her bedroom pop and shares her vocal abilities in ‘Where Are You Now?’ alongside “The Wrecks”. Fitting perfectly into the lineup, ‘Girlhouse’ delivers with witty lyrics, a fuck-you attitude, and major girlpower vibes.

With a vocalist such as Nick Anderson who’s voice is unmatched in this genre, smart lyrics and catchy beats to boot its no surprise that the tour was nearly sold out across the board with Los Angeles being no exception. The audience was wall to wall Saturday night as ‘The Wrecks’ appeared on stage and launched into, ‘Out of Style‘ followed by ‘Figure This Out‘.

Sporting a bandaged hand and a tour induced rasp, lead singer Nick didn’t let that slow him down; in fact it just goes to show how hard these guys work to deliver an unforgettable performance and the undeniable toll that touring can have on the body. The set list was a bit unexpected but delivered, with a mix of past and current songs including, ‘I Love This Part’, ‘Feels So Nice’, ‘Dystopia’, ‘This Life I Have’ and ‘Panic Vertigo’ followed by an acoustic performance of ‘Ugly Side’ and ‘Normal’. Later on in the evening ‘Mothe’ and ‘Girlhouse’ joined the band on stage for their song ‘Where Are You Now’.

With a total of 16 songs performed, only 6 were off of the current album which I found a bit surprising as I was anticipating to hear more of the new material but perhaps we will get that with the “Back and Better Than Ever Tour” Part 2 that was announced earlier this week. So friends, if you missed your opportunity this summer to catch ‘The Wrecks’ make sure to grab your tickets for the fall.
