Singer, Songwriter, activist, and pop icon-to-be Alex Freeman is a youthful and forward-thinking talent with an incredibly prolific streak who is already taking the music scene by storm. She spent the majority of 2020 quarantined in Florida, making the most out of her time by writing a staggering number of songs and recording a good chunk of them too.

Not long ago, Alex was standing in front of major audiences as an inspirational speaker, something that no doubt gave her the commanding presence and charismatic attitude to keep audiences engaged. Her latest song "Paper Mask" takes direct inspiration from the insanity that has been the ongoing health crisis.

We couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk to this bright young woman about her rising and exciting upcoming projects, take a look!:

I'm curious about the video for "Paper Mask", it seems like it ended with a cliff-hanger or a teaser for a follow-up. Will you continue the story later?

I think leaving the end of the music video up to the viewer's imagination is really exciting and it allows everybody to have their own idea and pov of how it ends.

So although paper mask does end on a cliffhanger I would love to add a follow-up but I don’t think I will.

But I am so excited for my newest song Oh Baby’s music video!! We are calling it “The Collector” it’s a teenage version of a mythological villain, Medusa!! It’s going to be so fun, I am a really creative human so I can’t wait to create my version of Medusa!! It will be on my YouTube channel- Miss Alex Freeman you have to check it out, it should be out mid September!!!

You’ve had an interesting career so far, you started out basically as an advocate for mental health, what drove you to that?

Well , when I was 5 years old I was bullied and my parents taught me that I could be a victim or I could use that experience to make a change. So, I wrote an anti-bullying anthem.  That song brought me so many opportunities to speak up for other kids that needed a voice.

The term “Mental Health” is in and of itself, quite a broad thing. What does mental health mean to you? Do you think it's a state or an ongoing process?

It is super broad and I think it’s a topic that gets thrown around a lot today.  To me, it means having the strength to be vulnerable, real, and authentic to myself and what I am feeling.  Taking time to strengthen and stretch my mindset and help others build theirs. Self-love, kindness to ourselves and others but setting boundaries for others to not interfere with what I need to be my best.  I am a fixer so I want to fix everyone’s problems but it depletes me and I have to keep that boundary up so I can show up for myself.  I think we all need to work on what makes us better every day and it’s a lifetime of learning and growing.  If we stop growing isn’t that the end for us all?

In this new stage as a musician, how do you feel those lessons learned about mental health tie into your music? after all one, never really stops advocating for such things, right?.

True!! Finding new ways to say the same things become the challenge.  If we boil down any song they are all about the same basic emotions.  So relating those emotions into what I feel is beautiful music becomes my goal.

Where do you feel like you come from musically? Who are your influences and inspirations?

I grew up in a health club and we had music playing every minute we were open.  All types of music.  At home mom would introduce me to Etta James, Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaugh, Back Eyed Peas, James Brown, Sting, India arie, David Guerra, Louie Prima, Harry Belafonte, Christina, Otis Redding, Amy Whinehouse, Niki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ray Charles, and so many more.  My dad brought rap and hair bands into my life. So I have a pretty broad musical taste.  My playlists are crazy!!

You should follow me on Spotify, where I share some of my inspirations for my songs.

I read that one of your 2020 goals was to write 20 songs, instead, you ended up with 55 and ecorded 34 of those so far, that's more than enough for an EP and two full-length albums. Firstoff: how did you accomplish such an impressively creative feat?

I am really goal-oriented and my ultimate goal is to become a great songwriter.  I found myself watching too much Netflix and decided I needed to do something productive during quarantine, so I created a goal to write 20 songs.  I just started writing, I think if you want to do something you need to just do it.  Get obsessed with it. Read books about it, listen to podcasts about it, take classes, surround yourself with people who do it...And get to work!!!   (I love to listen to “and the writer is” on Spotify with Ross Golan)

I think we creatives like to shroud our work in mystery and magic rather than skillset and practice. Same with vocals, people believe that if you can sing you are talented not that you have an amazing work ethic.

Speaking of full-length albums and EPs. When can fans expect any of these? can you tell?

I am releasing singles until I can build a fan base that would want an album/ep. In the much farther future you can definitely expect an album, but I have a wish list of co-writers and producers I’d want to put on that project!!!  Right now I have Oh Baby coming out August 27th and Broken Record shortly after that!! I’m just so happy to put out songs that I love and I think my friends and fans will love too.

Genre-wise what can we expect of these songs? Did you stick to a similar trap/Pop sound like in "Paper Mask" or did you experiment with other sounds and genres?

Yes!! This year has been about growing and learning what my sound will be. I now know that I love strings, piano and want to make orchestral pop music with HEAVY 808’s and interesting chord progressions, cool phrasing, and big power vocals.   I have taken this year to learn that.

The beginning of 2020 my songs reflect the producer's influence a bit more than mine and into 2021 now my musical style is very prevalent.  Broken Record may be my favorite song I’ve ever done!! Each song has its own personality as I develop as an artist and it’s so fun to experiment.  That’s one cool thing about artist today, thanks to Spotify we don’t have to be pigeonholed into one genre, one sound and stay there forever. For example my newest song, Oh baby is a pop song that has a super current sound and it’s so fun, a total vibe!

I’ve also learned that I have to produce if I want to truly create that perfect pop song that plays in my head!
